China, Xing Chengwen, a powerful example of success
China’s Cheng Wen defeated Croatia’s Donna Vekic 2-0 to become the first Olympic singles champion in Chinese tennis history.
Ten years ago, China’s Li Na won the Australian Open women’s singles trophy and became Asia’s first Australian Open singles champion.
At the time, many Chinese children watched the game on TV with great interest. The girl on the far right is Xing Chengwen, who was 11 years old.
At a press conference after his win, Xing Chengwen spoke about another role model Liu Xiang, the men’s 110m hurdles champion at the 2004 Athens Olympics. “Before the final match, I was watching Liu Xiang’s moment when he became the champion at the 2004 Athens Olympics,” Xing Chengwen said. I have often watched this video, and it inspires me a lot.” Liu Xiang 20 years ago, then 10 years
First Li Na and today Xing Chengwen, the power of example of success has been passed down from generation to generation.
“I always believe in passing the torch forward,” says Xing Chengwen. If my win today can bring the dreams of tennis to more children, it will be a great joy. I also hope that in the next 10 or 20 years, more young people will be able to stand on this stage.
